Blind Following...

The Signs of Spiritual Collapse?....

~written from the common sense perspective of The Winds of the Soul~

by Dr. Gregory C.D. Young, Ph.D.(Oxon.)

Avoid following the blind sounds like a  bit of simple instruction.   Being blindly led would seem to be a mistake to which few of us would willingly fall prey.  It appears rather straight forward.  But as we look around this world of ours, it seems to me that not many have gotten the Word (and yes, the pun is intended...)

From throughout the New Testament, the Lord Christ warns us to be aware of the blind leading the blind, specifically warning us to be aware of the blind amongst us that attempt to lead us in the same misdirection of themselves.  He spoke continually about "blind Pharisees," for instance (see Matthew 15-23), pointing out that these continually missed the point of the religion in which they purported to be experts.  Following this kind of teacher would surely lead to disaster.

Luke 6:39  And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?

How and why people follow bad advice isn't much of a mystery, except the fact that more rather than fewer today seem to be so inflicted.  Quick-fix artists abound, and they abound because they're profitable.  People like buying into their schemes of understanding, and likewise sustain their misbegotten activities

No where is this blindness more absurd and inane as when we are lectured by the media elites that we should respect the rights and actions of our attackers when they intentionally bomb civilians, though roundly criticized when making any form of self-defense against such deplorable activity because our enemy chooses to hide behind civilian shields.  Even though our enemy's actions constitute a war-crime pure and simple, our attentions are diverted into the vain imagining that terrorists should be regarded as "freedom fighters" and thus should be accorded the legal rights of any American citizen.

From psychology to religion and economics to politics, "blind," meaning poorly reasoned and ill thought-out, strategies which promise something for nothing have always attracted the weakest amongst us.  Lately, those that blindly deny the reality of consequence, for instance, love to think both the U.S. and Israel should fight a war with restraint and proportion, with both hands tied behind our back, as if the purpose is not to win but appease our enemies.

Nowhere is this blindness more absurd and inane as when we are lectured by the media elites that we should respect the rights and actions of our attackers when they intentionally bomb civilians, though roundly criticized when making any form of self-defense against such deplorable activity because our enemy chooses to hide behind civilian shields.  Even though our enemy's actions constitute a war-crime pure and simple, our attentions are diverted into the vain imagining that terrorists should be regarded as "freedom fighters" and thus should be accorded the legal rights of any American citizen.

But let me get to my point....  When we have to devout time and effort in making a case that ones' self-defense is actually justified against the whoring mob such as terrorists represent (no-brainer here!), and that such self-defense is not morally reprehensible as many elitist imagine it to be, then something is terribly wrong, and it is obvious that our national dialogue has fallen to a level of depravity that's no longer questionable.

There are basic lessons and perceptual skills that should have been adopted by now.  But when we retroactively have to painstakingly re-deliberate the fundamentals of kindergarten-politics and the recidivism of ignorance, we are in massive trouble.  When some now call for the "obvious" to proved to them, what is our recourse, except fit them with a new set of eyes (or a straight-jacket)?

Indeed, there are no more blind than those that refuse to see.  So why the learning disability?

And more importantly, what remains to be clearly understood is, 'how is it we got here?'  What's the basis of our not having learned the lessons of history?  What essential element has gone missing in our education that would allow such wanton ignorance to remain incubated and protected, and then be continually rewarded?

I believe, pure and simple, that much of the blame lies at the doors of organized religion, meaning the Churches and Synagogues of this nation.  These, who we have jointly entrusted to be the ensigns of our civilization, i.e., the keepers of the Judeo-Christian Standard, are responsible for such backsliding.  Of course, we are singularly responsible as well when passively allowing the misdirection to go uncorrected.

Indeed, I fear the same false dribbling sentimentality found amongst the liberal appeasement artists of today has first found root amongst Christians and Jews of this nation, or should I say CAJINO's (Christian and Jews in name only).... those that continue to change the messages of the Bible's fair proportions to suit their own current lifestyle.  That they continue to walk proudly under the name of their religion but rarely understand the imbedded responsibilities, is clear.

It's ironic that many so-called God-fearing people will without equivocation assure any who would listen that we are a nation built upon Judeo-Christian standards, yet critically fail to see that the power and responsibilities of teaching those standards remains largely within the teachings of our churches and synagogues, which in turn educate and protect our families.  Let those standards slide, and everything else built upon it slides with it.

Being a Judeo-Christian based society means that our value systems are derived from the Judeo-Christian experience.  Change this foundation in anyway for the worse, and the telltale cracks will soon be reverberating throughout our culture, even changing the very ways we think and act.  Indeed, when these standards are tampered with or changed in any degree, their ramifications will resonate throughout society soon after, often leading to the undermining of the very strengths that have made this nation great under God.

Now, church activities and doctrines do not generally turn up on "Page 1" of nationally distributed newspapers, nor are these matters a usual point of interest on the evening news.  Except when a church decides to elect a gay bishop, the story takes on its significance not from a religious point of view but more from the politics which are sure to ensue.  But as a matter of course, the nuances of religion are seen as mundane and uninteresting.  But perhaps they shouldn't be...

You may recall that it was in the sixties and seventies that most churches and synagogues were failing to keep people in their ranks.  Church and synagogue attendance were both down.  Panic ensued as budgets could no longer be met, and soon after, religious institutions were closing.

Due to this growing blight, marketers were retained who suspiciously determined that "religion" was in dire need of a grand facelift... something that could retune and modernize the message, making it more accessible to the guy on the street.

There was little thought that the real reason for low attendance was that the original message had already become so diluted and unrecognizable that it attracted fewer and fewer people.  So, the shameful and incompetent weakening of the message was never openly criticized or faulted.  Instead, true to the miracles of a religious make-over, the whole problem was just repackaged, keeping the weakness fully intact, and of course protecting those that ruled the steeples by closing ranks around themselves.  The religious bureaucracy triumphed again, but fell even further away from the Truth.

To a great degree, the solution of the moment was to become more liberal, more relaxed, less ceremonial, more lax in the doctrine, attempting to attract more folks to come and sit in their seats.  "Modernize" was the call to success..., creating sing-ins and hootenannies, warmly embracing the "sixties," or face empty seats and continuing budget problems.  Never were the roots of the problem openly investigated.

Although I believe that the "Truth of the Gospel" never goes out of fashion, over time many churches and synagogues learned to sell-out to even more diluted versions of the truth, promising everything for nothing, modernized versions that they claimed were less demanding and easier to follow, and thus more attractive to the misdirected "tell-them-what-they-want-to-hear" masses.

And it created a bonanza for organized religion.  The rows of unoccupied pews of yesterday were soon packed again.  Building funds, once slow in progress, now overflowed, turning from accountant's red ink to black within a season.  Charismatic preachers and rabbis' took to the airwaves with their new found confidence and audience.  Revivals took on air of respectability and played evermore into mainstream America.  It looked like things were once again on track again.  After such a facelift, religion was once again cool, friendly and "chummy."  America had reawakened....

Or had it....?

The matter of cheapening, if not abandoning, the purity of Biblical lessons to be wisely learned was thought secondary, because if you couldn't get people to come to worship in the first place, then the meat of the message being preached wouldn't matter anyway.  Or so they reasoned.  And that bit of slippery slope is still with us today....

Indeed, many churches and synagogues today are capable of performing Las Vegas-style Entertainment Reviews to ensure that the coppers continue to flow.  This perspective soon became the new profitable vision of Christianity and Judaism, the new view of hot-tub-feel-good version of religion, namely to entertain, rather than educate.  And they have become the new "Quick-fix" artists and snake oil salesmen of our modern world, drunken not with wine, but with their own vain imaginings.

Amidst all the fury of growth, the rudiments of the Gospels fair proportions were overwritten with the modernization of the glitz and crease of professional programming.  Chrome and glass, steeples and gardens, campuses of religion instruction all grew from this new foundation and abounded in our fair land, except the "curriculum" had changed in the process.

The smorgasbord approach to religion proved very popular and profitable for those that followed the admonition of "to each his own."  But it has become a tower of Babel in our modern world, actually deterring the promised coalescing of the Truth within us.  Obscured now are the very rudiments of the Gospel and how it was to be precisely implemented into our individual lives.

KJV Isaiah 42:17-20   17 Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the LORD the cup of his fury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out.  18 There is none to guide her among all the sons whom she hath brought forth; neither is there any that taketh her by the hand of all the sons that she hath brought up.

19 These two things are come unto thee; who shall be sorry for thee? desolation, and destruction, and the famine, and the sword: by whom shall I comfort thee?  20 Thy sons have fainted, they lie at the head of all the streets, as a wild bull in a net: they are full of the fury of the LORD, the rebuke of thy God.

We have, therefore, not just committed “one,” but “two” evils. First, we have turned away from His Voice within us, ousting His Pattern and forsaking Him for another master. Second, we have made or hewn ourselves into vessels “that can hold no water,” no longer fit even to carry His Spirit—concluding that we have lost the spiritual capacity to recognize His Voice and grown blind to those things that resonate with His Pattern of Righteousness and Goodness. Hence, having fashioned ourselves into creatures that are now spiritually dysfunctional and incapable of performing as once intended, we have become “broken cisterns.”

Oh sure, we all seem to have the language down pat.  We all seem to know what to say and do to ensure that others know that we are of the same religious family. But in the process, our understanding and practice of the Gospel remains at best superficial and imprecise.

We have diluted the significance of the message, and such a dilution has seeped into the framework of our nation, its laws and authorities, damaging our culture and traditional good sense.  As in Europe, where religious ideology and belief is today but a thin veneer, so is this happening in America.  The reality of these consequences are unmistakable, leading to the "dumbing down" of our national dialogue.

KJV Jeremiah 2:11-13 11 Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit. 12 Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the LORD. 13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

As I have written previously in the Winds of Forgiveness, this scripture in particular defines our folly.  In my other words....

"Here, the Lord declares that “my people have changed their glory,” meaning that we have changed and redirected our preferences, unseating and supplanting the gift of God’s “glory” given to us (i.e., His Name and Light) ”for that which doth not profit.” That is, we have abandoned His Seed-Pattern within us, forsaking the source and Fountain of His Living Waters, to instead follow after the ways and indoctrinations of the world, even those things “which are yet no gods.” In so doing, we have acquiesced to obey something which has no capacity to offer Salvation nor teach the differences between right and wrong—and thus has no glory or hope of profit..., only desolation."

"For surely, without embracing His Pattern we will become desolate.

"God made it possible that each of us “felt” and experienced the Light in abundance from each of our respective beginnings. We all knew its influence, its security, its peace, its “goodly feeling.” The Winds of our Soul were known by each of us from our onset; and it freely and generously enriched each of our lives when we were young children. But, by not continually and faithfully listening to the Light, we failed to keep its brightness within us. Having been first given Light only then to later deny its power is a great but common mistake—the reason for all our personal failings thereafter"

"Each of us has experienced such gradual attenuation of His Spirit. Each of us turned away, and in so doing began the long process of Fragmentation, wherein the children we used to be slowly became exiled from our conscious stream, and the embedded treasure of Heaven (i.e., His Seed-Pattern) along with them. Except for Christ, not one of us proved entirely faithful. We cannot plead ignorance about this matter, or pridefully believe that we were one of the ones who didn’t turn away when indeed our Light has grown dimmer over time. Nor can we rationalize that somehow the experiences of His Light within us was never made clear, or that we’ve misunderstood or perhaps never stumbled across its ways. No, we can’t do that."

Yet we have allowed this precious teaching to be taken away from us, pandering to those that are the weakest amongst us.  Instead of teaching the weakest the ways of the Gospel that will make them strong, we have simply reduced the common denominator ever further, making us all weaker in the process.

In this manner have our religious institutions failed us.  They have soldout for the fanfare of worldly success, just like the treacherous liberal hippies of the sixties did who are now the narcissistic babyboomers running our institutions of government and religion.  Just as did the scribes and Pharisees of Christ's time, so do many of the religious leaders of today profit, and by their profit, miserably lead:

KJV Matthew 23:1 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:   3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.  4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,  6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,  7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.  9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. 10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. 11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.  14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

Page 6

"...And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. 31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. 32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. 33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of  hell?"

15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. 16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!

17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? 18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.

19 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? 20 Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon. 21 And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein. 22 And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon. 23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.  24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.

25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. 26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.

27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. 28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,

30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. 31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. 32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. 33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

Just as did the scribes and Pharisees of old, so do our leaders do today.  They have disemboweled the message of the Lord, parsing it beyond recognition.  Each leader claims that his perspective is the correct one, each one saying to come and follow after his view of the Gospel's message....after his view of the Christ and His Teachings. About this, the Lord warned us specifically, stating.....

KJV Mark 13:21-24   21 And then if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not:  22 For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect. 23 But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things. 24 But in those days, after that tribulation, (my emphasis) the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light,  25 And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken.

Make no mistake about it, we are in this particular "tribulation" now.  The blind are leading the blind in all walks of life, and there appears to be quite a following.  Instead of becoming strong, after the Gospel's promises, we have become quick to subordinate to anyone who appears to have the answer, cowardly letting someone else make the decisions for us.  And we do this now automatically....extending such blindness so as to  influence us economically, politically, legally, educationally, and medically.

Our very habits of self-determination and independence have been quashed and silenced, all of which began in the dilution of teachings stemming from modern Judeo-Christian standards, and all within the very institutions where we thought those standards were being protected and strengthened.

Indeed, we have become the blind being led by the blind.  Like Texas line dancing, we appear attracted to the robotic and the safe, the rhythmic mindless comfort of being associated with a group, any group... as long as we all breathe together and no one loses step so as to upset the sycophantic synchrony.  That's a scary thought.  But there we are....

I pray that we all choose wisely in every aspect of our temporal and spiritual lives.... I pray that we know who it is we are truly following....
