Understanding the Basics...Part 10

Things no longer taught in our Churches and Synagogues....

~written from the common sense perspective of The Winds of the Soul~

to the book

Yet, the needed mechanics of these spiritual quintessential activities, the next and exacting steps we need to then take to ensure we are on the correct path, seems to be left out of the instruction manual.  Furthermore, nobody seems distressed over what else is missing.... as everything else is a "mystery" and needn't be known.

The idea of "believing in Jesus Christ" has many interpretations and practices within Christendom today.  Although many are correct in referring to Christ as the cornerstone of Christianity, their understanding of how to activate and then nurture this faith is generally fragmented and piecemeal..., sending us off in the right direction but rarely ever bringing us to the "Promised Land."

For instance, some simply profess that in the least we need to acknowledge Him, that is, in some manner and to some cosmetic and calculated degree "agree within ourselves" that He is the Son of God and witness that by following His Commandments, and that that should suffice to ensure our salvation.  Others more formally, but perhaps as vaguely, direct that we should believe in Christ and follow after Him, seeking repentance and baptism thereafter.  And still others maintain and emphasize only that we need to be "born again," .... all honoring the Lord with their lips, but their heart remains far from Him, as is explained and warned about in Isaiah:

Isaiah 29:13-16 13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:            14 Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.

15 Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us? 16 Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter's clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?

But the Gospel message should not be parsed or parted, offered up as a smorgasbord of choices as in the liberal deluded New Age summaries offered above, "16...turning of things upside down" and skewing its fair proportions.

Offering just "part of the Gospel," as do many who "have left Christianity behind for liberation theology" (see: Lawrence Henry's "Praise Music Flunks," American Spectator, 6/29/07) and "13 ...whose fear toward me is taught by the precept of men..." was never the intention of the Lord.

Neither should one, when seeking for the directions of Heaven, settle for some vaporous and incomplete set of instructions with the hope that we'll figure it out over time.  Unfortunately, that's what many end up doing today.

Furthermore, in all or part of these interpretations and directions we are never taught how obedience to these tenets, no matter how useful they appear to be, specifically accumulates to our soul's welfare, and how such is actually sanctified for our benefit..., except for the fact that these enable His Atonement upon us, which then saves us from the consequences of our sins.

This is not meant by any means to downplay the latter's importance, nor does it mean that we should not find reason to do much on the basis of faith.  Indeed, the entirety of salvation through faith on the Name of Jesus Christ should be shouted from the rooftops.

Yet, the needed mechanics of these spiritual quintessential activities, the next and exacting steps we need to then take to ensure we are on the correct path, seem to be left out of the instruction manuals.  Furthermore, nobody seems distressed over what else is missing.... cavalierly believing that everything else is a "mystery" and needn't be known.

But I disagree.  I don't believe that everything we don't understand must remain a "mystery." And contrary to many in Christendom, the very mechanics of our faith surely needs to be known and resolutely practiced if we are at all serious about our salvation, as has been clearly laid out within the Scriptures themselves.  In fact, about this very point we are admonished against blindness, and especially about following the blind.

Just as the seed of an Oak (an acorn), has endowed within it all the necessary instruction to become a mature and mighty Oak tree given the proper planting and nurturing thereafter, so does the Lord's Seed-Pattern within us have the power to make us after His Image, if nurtured correctly from the dust of the earth that we are.  Once activated, the seed will germinate and begin to grow after the manner of its heritage, after the manner of the pattern of its  parent.

Cutting right to the heart of the matter, the basis of this problem stems from a lack of understanding of how we are actually and spiritually connected to the Father through Christ, as well as how to revere and nurture that "said connection" through life..., and most importantly, how that personal "connection" then enables the Lord's Atonement to be applied to our lives, washing us clean and saving us from our sins.

As I have written often before, this very connection is with His Spirit, even the Spirit of Christ, which is the spiritual presence of the Name of Christ or the Light of Christ within us, even the very Seed of His Blessed Pattern within us, which in turn has the Eternal power of transforming us into His literal Children, empowered and sanctified by His Atonement.  For some reason, this fact appears lost among the clutter and clatter of Christian denominationalism today.

It is because this very Seed of Christ placed within us (it remaining dormant until an expression of our faith in His Goodness proves sufficient---to the degree of at least becoming again a little child believing in Him) that He speaks to us about His being "in us," and we "within Him," as He is "within the Father," and the Father "within Him."  That is the veritable holy connection.

These are indisputable spiritual realities. (see John 14: 10-11, 20).

Moreover, this "Spiritual connection" is Familial in nature, and is central to the Gospel's message.  This is critically important to understand, because it speaks to the "connection's" legitimacy and subsequent authority.  It is the closest "connection" that is possible, for it is bound both by blood and Spirit.  It is one that Jesus Christ clearly spoke about on every occasion and is threaded through most if not all of His pivotal discourses to us, including the preamble of the Lord's Prayer by stating "Our Father which art in Heaven...."

But, we must understand that before this proclamation, much of Israel labored under the belief that God was not as close as Jesus taught, and that there was no real or literal familial connection available.  Yes, God was God alright, they reasoned, but to consider Him as "Father" was not openly spoken about, lest one would be thought of as being arrogant and blasphemous.  The rift between God and man caused by the fall was real, and to believe that there was any form of "connection" remaining (especially familial) was idle, if not specious, talk alone....

So it was (and sadly remains) that Israel believed that the separation between God and man was historically clear.  In that vein, the God of the Old Testament, of the Torah as taught by the Scribes and Pharisees, was essentially unreachable, and making any sort of connection with the Almighty seemed unthinkable and untenable for discussion..., because they believed it would otherwise put man "on par" with God, as one would be (necessarily to some degree) if one were actually a part of His "Family."  This rigid perception of separatism held true throughout the history of Israel, and remains largely responsible for the state of cognitive dissonance today.

Yet, closer reading of the Scriptures would reveal that the One who had thundered upon Mount Sinai and caused such fear amongst Israel that none dared approach Him..., had actually invited them to become closer!  Indeed, it was within the context of that glorious familial invitation that the Lord was willing and wanting to write within their hearts His very Own Law----His very Own Authority----His "stamp" and "mark" of His Family----so as to reestablish His "connection" with His People again.

Notwithstanding the real differences that exist between God and man (in that, His Thoughts are not our thoughts and His Ways are not our ways: see Isaiah 55:8-13), He remains a "Father" calling out to His Children, wanting to impress within them His Sacred Heritage, reminding them that they are of His "Family."

But as the text below indicates, the Children of Israel proved feckless and afraid even when the invitation was made clear to them.  Even when they were invited to become His Children again, Israel turned to Moses and asked him to intervene for them instead.

A great opportunity had been missed..., but Israel could go on comforting itself in falsely believing that a closer connection just wasn't possible anyway.  In that way, they could rationalize and then believe that there really wasn't any opportunity in the first place, so they hadn't really missed anything at all.....  Right! (said sarcastically)

"As the Lord caused the foundation of the earth to quake around them, I think that He was also moving His Foundation within them as well, causing His very presence to shake and rise up within them. Just as the elements of nature began to chorus about them, the elements of their very person also began to resound in sympathetic, synchronous, and harmonious resonation. The dust of the earth (of which they were made) was responding to its Creator’s call. Forms of movement and exposure that were happening all around them, were also having influence within them, adding to their great fear and consternation.

Exodus 20:18-21 18 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off. 19 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die. 20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not. 21 And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.

As I have written previously in the Winds of Forgiveness, there is much to learn about ourselves from the behavior of the Children of Israel, especially during this special time....  Herein, we may finally gain some insight as to why they turned away and denied themselves the immediate intimacy of a Higher Family (pages 414-420):

"By this record [i.e. Exodus 19 & 20], we learn that God actually wanted to speak directly to Israel, giving them the Ten Commandments from His very Mouth, to the point of writing or installing the Commandments on the fleshy tablets of their heart, so that their very heart and mind would reflect the Will of God in all things they were to put their hands to thereafter. Yet, as can be seen in the Scriptures given above [Exodus 19 & 20], the nation of Israel became increasingly terrified of God as the time of His approach drew near. As preparations continued, His Word thundered and His Lightning creased the sky. Smoke, earthquakes, and resounding trumpet blasts grew ever more loud and disconcerting. One can only imagine what it must have been like—surreal and supernatural, surpassing the terror of any physical phenomenon directly experienced all by itself.

"By all accounts, the experience was designed to be overwhelming, orchestrated to bring every soul to attention. A challenging uneasiness began to be felt throughout the camp of Israel. No doubt, all of this was to impress upon the Israelites the power of God their Creator, the King of the Universe, the author of their Deliverance, and how Omnipotent and Omniscient He was, demonstrating the need to subsequently obey His Commandments if they were to stay within His mighty protection.

"Although, it was certainly not a quiet event, I don’t think that it was just the extreme and deafening noise, nor the constantly changing sky or the radical shifting of the earth beneath their feet that was so alarming and frightening. I believe something else was happening to them as well, something happening to each one of them internally, something that mirrored the enormity of the physical events they were experiencing externally.

"And within this unveiling, would not other things once held in personal secret also possibly be exposed as well? It is said that when we stand before, and then perhaps within, the presence of God, all truth about us cannot help but be summarily revealed. Because His Light is so powerfully penetrating, we could hardly expect to remain hidden from all of ourselves and all that we thought we could hide from His view. The record of our every thought, word, and deed would be undeniable, resonating from within us at such a rate that we could not turn away from the uncomfortable truth of it. Everything would be revealed instantly and omnisciently.

"Remember, He holds the dust of us together with His Breath, just as He does the earth itself. They are of the same material—only the greater portion of His Breath differentiates us further. If He could move the earth, He certainly could move us in some similar way, making us quake from within.

So, we can imagine that the Children of Israel became subject to the events at hand, perhaps producing a kind of internal division tremoring within themselves, almost as if their conscience began to stir within their awareness as a separate entity, a form of personally revealing, truth-defining exposure which would have suddenly and fearfully come upon them in their minds and hearts without warning. Within this perspective, I think that He may have been simply reawakening the Light within them and stirring it from its previous slumber. With such a quickening of Spirit, perhaps they would begin to anxiously feel and witness the unprecedented and intimate presence of God Almighty Himself, something from which they could not turn away, something which was terrifying to the initiate and the unprepared.

"Indeed, faced with such an unveiling, the Children of Israel likely began to witness a type and kind of exposure that was far too bright for them to behold without a modicum of psychological and Spiritual pain—a presence which was all revealing, and perhaps too immediately revealing for those attempting His audience. Pressed with such an overwhelming experience, perhaps flooded with the thoughts of things hidden, repressed, and believed forgotten—having these uncomfortable things suddenly revealed without measure and in the same instance—they might not have had the will nor the desire to directly face anything about their God thereafter.

Page 4

"Perhaps this is why it has been repeatedly queried in various ways within the Scriptures, "Who is it that can withstand the Presence of God Almighty?" The fear of God is as much placed upon His Omnipotence as the fact that everything about us would be exposed and declared because of the very nature of His Presence. His Light could not help but automatically reveal everything about us, exposing everything that we thought, said, did, or had done. In that very instance, the truth of all our intentions, desires, and motivations would become like a tidal wave breaking in upon us, immediately revealing everything about us for all to see..., one that proved ourselves by our own hand. If our sins were before largely suppressed, all plausible denial would suddenly be stripped away. No longer would there remain any further place where we could go and hide. Who of us today could behold and withstand such personal revelation all at once?

"Such an experience would surely have been unprecedented, likely transcending anything they would have known before, and would not have been something that they would have anticipated. To the extent that they were personally unfamiliar with the Light, they would fear its startling invitation. In a word, it was "scary," revealing everything below the waterline. Subsequently, they shrank from His Presence and offer of Spiritual intimacy. Where Moses heard the wondrous and harmonic symphony of God’s Voice and Will, the Children of Israel heard deafening and discomforting "noise." Where Moses joyfully basked in the Light of the Lord, the Children of Israel found themselves being burned by His very Presence.

"But as we saw, even though Israel was offered this opportunity, and given instructions to prepare themselves, they turned away. Indeed, only because they turned away from such an opportunity did the Lord finally write His Commandments on tablets of stone. Due to their continuing fear and hardened hearts, most of Israel would not receive them in any other way. And in this there is yet another lesson for us to learn....

"Writing the Commandments on Stone was no doubt useful in preserving the Law for the Children of Israel, or so have many espoused. Yet, let’s think about this for a moment. There’s more to be gleaned from this then the material of stone was at hand and proved a useful medium to conserve the Commandments of the Lord. Knowing His power of preservation, the Lord surely could have written the Commandments upon any medium He chose, and likewise caused for it to be preserved accordingly. For you see, God can preserve anything that He wishes and proved this with the Children of Israel in their forty year sojourn through the wilderness before allowing them to enter into the Land of Promise. All during this time, He worked a wonderful miracle by maintaining their health and the health of their livestock. But most remarkably, He even preserved everything else within their possession, including the shoes and sandals on their feet from wearing out, keeping the leather sound and firm for over forty years! How would we like a pair of shoes, or all of our possessions for that matter, to last for forty years without depreciation, decay, or wear?

Page 5

"Nevertheless, I would suggest that Israel’s unpreparedness was, and remains at present, directly caused by their unwillingness to embrace the sensitivities within them, even the children they used to be. And that, too, is the very cause of our unpreparedness today. I believe that when we enlist those habits of suppression, repression, and denial that specifically diminish our Spiritual sensitivities, we also cause ourselves to become furthered shackled with the fetters of Hell. By muting the responsiveness of the children we used to be, we demonstrate that we prefer something other than His Voice.

"So, His choosing of stone as the material of choice upon which His Commandments were engraved, instead of leather or wood or some other fabric like papyrus, was teaching us something about ourselves..., teaching us that our unprepared hearts, which could not receive His Word because of stubbornness and pride, were as hard and cold and inanimate as stone to the reception of His Commandments. Upon tablets of stone was He then obliged to write His Word to us, not only to remind us to soften our hearts to His Word, but how much better it would be to have these directions engraved within and upon our hearts, indeed!

"So it was perhaps that despite their preparation and Moses’ instructions, the nation of Israel would not open their hearts and would not sensitize themselves to the possibilities of a child’s countenance. Thereafter, they grew too afraid of being directly and personally impacted by the ramifications of His Omniscient Presence or the promised revelations to come. And to some degree, I think most of us can empathize with them. I’m not sure how any of us would stay that test of immediate all-consuming exposure. And again, that’s my point. Such exposure would enlist the uncovering and confutation of all that we’ve done wrong without any spin or rationalization. It would bare us stark naked without excuse and without cover. I don’t know about you, but I don’t think that I would be able to weather such an event without similar trepidation and terror, no matter how much I profess to love my God.

"Without our repentance and return to the Spiritual sensitivities within us, we then remain unprepared to face the Voice without severe trepidation, since the Voice within us is still treated as an enemy and not a friend. To have that Voice suddenly break forth upon us, when we have yet to prepare a place for it within us, before we have yet learned to befriend its influence, trust in its inherent goodness, and vibrate with the same very resonance, would be very unsettling indeed. Surely, until we had learned to embrace the children we used to be and the Spiritual influences they comprise, we would not be prepared to receive the Voice or any of its antecedents with any sense of joy. The Light would be just too bright, too challenging, too revealing... And subsequently, we would probably shrink from any further influence, just as did the hardened hearts of the Children of Israel.

Page 6

"They, like us, could not recognize the wonder and beauty of His Light within them, for they gave it no place, having already exiled the children they used to be from their conscious awareness. When confronted with their Father in Heaven, they saw Him not as their Father, not as something familiar and akin..., but rather, because of the unrecognized distance between them, they beheld what was to them something scary and even nightmarish. They did not see Him in any way as being like themselves, or that there was possibly any affinity existing between them. Having for years summarily repressed the manner of their kinship, they could no longer recognize who it was that loved them and brought them out of bondage.

"They could not even fathom that they were made in His Image, or what being created in His Image really meant—not being able to understand that they were created to be His Children, with a natural affection towards their Heavenly Father and everything Good that came from His Hand. In fact, God "as their Heavenly Father" was something that most of them could not even imagine without the thought of blaspheming. True, they had been miraculously delivered out of Egypt, but they credited the act as impersonally as one does when playing Monopoly and receives a free get-out-of-jail-card. In actuality, they still had no idea as from what bondage the Lord was still working to free them—even from the slavery of their own sins and from that which stood in the way between His Love, their hearts, and the children they used to be.

"We must remember that the Children of Israel had been in bondage for over 400 years, experiencing both physical slavery and spiritual darkness before Moses was raised up to be sent to them. In Bible-terms, that’s approximately four generations, confirming His Word that "I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments." (ibid. vs. 5-6). The fact that Israel remained in bondage for some four hundred years with the caveat that the iniquity of the fathers will be visited unto the fourth generation (again, 400 years) until they acknowledge Him, is hardly coincidental. These were a people that had turned from the Voice within themselves for a very long time—the misbegotten culture and social pressures having by this time marginalized the importance of His Voice within them to something insignificant and trite.

"The parallels between their time and ours should be startling but incontrovertible, for we and our society have done the very same thing and suffer from the very same misapprehension of the Voice within us, even those Spiritual impressions carried by the children we used to be.... Indeed, the message should be clear enough for us today. Most specifically, when we reject the sensitivities of our heart, and thereby deny the sympathetic, synchronous, and harmonious resonations of His Spirit and Principle, we harden ourselves against His Voice and incur the displeasure and wrath of God..., even to the point of inviting His chastening lessons within our lives in order to bring us back into His fold..."

So it appears that the Children of Israel did not wish to come any closer to their God.  They did not wish to be reawakened to the Heavenly connections within themselves even when offered the opportunity.

Hence, there is every reason to understand and conclude that when God actually chose to enliven His Spirit with them...., to switch-on His Connection within them (so to speak) to the point of writing His Influence upon their heart, and in so doing move closer to His people..., they chose instead to move away from Him!  What with the awakening of their senses to His Presence, instead of rushing to Him, they chose to stand "afar off!"

Again, I believe that the "power" of His Spirit proved too unsettling to them, to uncomfortable to be around, making them wish that the previous distance remain between them, leading them to cower and fearfully withdraw from the Light that was beckoning them ever forward.

We may at first blush respond by saying, "Astounding!  Why would anybody refuse to be closer to His Spirit?"  But, think again.... Hasn't this happened to us as well?

Sure it has.... Each time our conscience responds to one of our sinful actions, we generally act first to defensively withdraw from the subtle and sometimes not so subtle reproach rather than approach His Word within us.  We are not so quick to accept the introspection of His Light, not so quick to see His Insight as "Help" other than unwanted painful criticism, not so quick to admit our faults and weaknesses, not so ready to see our mistakes.  At these times, we discount the feelings of His brooding ruminations within us, dismiss His Council and admonishment as not appropriate, slough off any remnant of shame by excusing ourselves in the process.  It's become so habitual that we are rarely aware of even going through the motions.

We thus choose as did the Children of Israel..., to withdraw from His Burning Presence, and in so doing we are making the same bold statement to Heaven as did the Children of Israel before us.... Namely, let there be a distance between us and Thee..., or in the words of Exodus:   "19... let not God speak with us, lest we die."

But we don't talk about it so plainly nor wish to see our cowering so definitively and saliently.  Even though God would write His Law upon and within our hearts, and we should not be afraid of His Presence for the Help that He brings us, we choose differently and darkly, to the degree that we don't even want to admit what slander we've done to ourselves and to His Voice within us.

Just as Moses explained, as in:     "20...Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not,"... :  God wishes to be close to us, to become resensitized to His Spirit and "to be before our face."  In this manner, He wishes to aid us in our perceptions and judgments so that we are delivered from evil and are persuaded to step away from temptation.

We nonetheless move away from such a prescription and deny the very "connection" that He wishes to reestablish within us.., preferring instead to keep our ignorance, our sins and remain unclean.  Indeed, without the "connecting presence" of His Spirit before our face, we will continue to stumble into sin and thereafter deny the fact that a sin has even been committed.

His "better way" for us is too acknowledge His Connection within us within every minute of every day so as to grow closer to His Influence (not just on the Sabbath) allowing it to have continual sway throughout our daily walk before Him.  That is His preference for us.

But we tend to avoid His Light when and because our deeds are dark, and when we don't want to feel the discomfort of personal shame or admonishment.  So we run away.  Just like the Children of Israel did.... running away from His Light, running from His Discipline, running from His Help.

So, if our "Connection" has become incrementally muted over time, or diminished in importance, so that we don't hear or mind it's influence anymore..., or if the "Connection" has never been adequately defined in the first place..., then we remain as did the Children of Israel..., apart from the Lord our God, followers in the wilderness for a life-time and kept from ever entering the Promised Land.

We can claim that we are His People all we want, just as those in the camp of Israel that came before us did.  We can esteem each other as stalwart Judeo-Christians from sunup to sundown, verbally acknowledging all our good works in Christ's Name.  We can even make ourselves feel self-assured and secured in our deluded belief that we are protected and loved by Heaven, by divers means and ego-boosting rants.

But without actually and continually embracing the humbling "connection" to His Spirit----and without restoring the process whereby the children that we used to be can again become restored within us so as to become again as a sincere little child believing in Him----we will never be allowed to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.  Those are His Words, not mine....  The real and actual personal "connection" is that important!  And the circuit cannot be disregarded or shorted out by some other willful means.  There is no other way through which we are to pass....

Therefore, it's not by an earthly token or some badge of acceptable membership that will get us through the Gates, but by the "Spiritual Connection" that lives and breathes with us alone.  It is the recorded history of that "Connection" within us, specifically in how nurtured, sincere and willing our interaction with the living Name within us (i.e., the Spirit of Christ) actually was, which subsequently leaves His telltale mark of being of His Family indelibly imprinted upon us and within us..., and which ultimately proves that we have taken the time to know and revere as well as to love and obey His Will while here upon earth..., and through the same bridge of experience, thus allowed Him to know us....

Without this bidirectional activity ongoing within us, we remain as lost as does ancient Israel..., and because of that critical misstep He will profess to our face at the last day: "I know you not."

But let us not be so surprised!  It's now all up to us..., His having paid the Eternal Price for all our sins.  Embrace His Light within us and make His Voice our friend!  Reengage the circuit and make the "connection" sure!  Activate His Will within us, and learn of the Forgiveness and Remission of sins His Atonement promises us.  His Promised Land awaits!

Remember this July 4th weekend that the Lord is the primordial author of our Liberty..., and our Founding Fathers and all those since who have honorably and courageously served to keep us free as a nation have acted in His Name, for only His is the true Cause and Foundation of Freedom.

May we never forget....
