The Neutering of an "American"...

Liberal Elitist Divisiveness in Multiculturalism....

~written from the common sense perspective of The Winds of the Soul~

by Dr. Gregory C.D. Young, Ph.D.(Oxon.)

to the book

Rather I am pointing out that when we're careless, our definitions and acceptance of things lose their sense of balance, and in the process, their "discerning edge" over time.  And before we know it, things aren't what they were, and what "was" becomes lost.

Just as we have allowed Christianity to be become liberally redefined to the extent that homosexuality and Gay and Lesbian rights are becoming acceptable within our churches, staining the glass ever further and darker, somewhere along the line, we have similarly begun to allow all sorts of things become misrepresented as "American."

Now again, having made such a statement doesn't imply that it's time for another bloody inquisition.  I'm not suggesting that all Gays be run out of town on a rail, or burned at the stake, or that the John Bircher's should run the country.

Rather I am pointing out that when we're careless, and asleep at the watch, our definitions and acceptance of things lose their sense of balance, and in the process, their "discerning edge" over time.  And before we know it, things aren't what they were, and what "was" becomes lost.

There was a time when being an American implied a number of things that just don't seem to be talked about or practiced anymore.  America was thought to be a vast melting pot of people and their cultures.  Emphasis on "melting"---a place where in order to become an American one would willingly surrender the preferences and prejudices of superiority of ones own "mother culture" to the American way that was already here.  America was to assimilate and receive the best of all the people that came to her.  And that best was to be added to the backbone, the sinew, and the muscle of what America was all about.

So, being true to Emma Lazarus' intent ("with silent lips"), herein is proclaimed that "ancient lands" may keep all the malignancies that have failed them, all those of privileged ancestry that have proven false, unfaithful, and have conspired only to advantage themselves by their indigenous twisted faire.  Indeed, "keep all your self-absorbed aristocracies, your egocentric elitisms, your pathology of criminals in high places of pretence and ceremony, your designer culture and systems of failed justice, and your anti-egalitarian beliefs,.....Keep all this rotting garbage you so esteem, even all your sordid and 'storied pomp,'" the Lady cries!  Please don't think that these will be welcomed, because they are not!

Yes, by all means, as Emma Lazarus poignantly penned the sonnet for the Grand Old Lady, come one and come all to a place of freedom unparalleled in this world:

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles.
From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips.
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Emma Lazarus

“The New Colossus”  1883

Parenthetically, isn't it interesting to note that whenever we hear Lazarus' words, it always begins mid-paragraph with "Give me your tired...", and never starting with the actual prelude to these verses, especially where the red text sets the context and tone?

This poem was and remains a silent but salient  indictment against the nations of the world that proved so slothful in their stewardships and duties by serving their masses so poorly...., these "ancient lands" so devoid of light and humanity, that denied their people the dignities and responsibilities of freedom.

Rather, send instead all those that you wrongfully neglected and persecuted, those that were made downcast and suffered wrongly by your hand, those that you have belittled, outcast, and rejected, even those "huddled masses yearning to breathe free."

Indeed, send all those that have since acknowledged the wrongfulness of your many ways, those that seek to escape your dark world and find a better way----these we will receive as diamonds in the rough who will make us strong and great, as you blindly keep and prize the bauble of polished glass that you are, thinking stupidly that you have made the better deal.

To be sure, to this day, for those with the vision and determination to come away from the worse and enter into the better, the Lady lifts her "lamp beside the golden door!"  with the caveat:  "Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp..."

We are like a grand orchestra, and we enjoy all the different kinds of instruments that may come to us.  But they all must learn to play from the same score, so we're all playing the same symphony and blend with the harmonies of the other instruments, lest the music is soured and the power of the melody lost.  In other words, in welcoming the influx of other people, America encourages others to "add" only, not dominate, their own subculture within the American experience.

As was and continues to be implied by the Grand Old Lady today, everyone is of course welcomed..., one and all... but as said by the Lady herself....., there is an exception: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE leave behind the notion that your mother-culture is to predominate here. In fact, PLEASE leave your bad habits behind you...all of them.

Those before you have, to their best intentions, left behind them the things that didn't work in their old countries, including practices that hurt and diminished people, cultural habits and laws that were unjust, etc. And those of us that are now here still prefer to keep those bad habits and policies out of this country..., thank you very much...

In short, America does not wish to be inflicted with the ways and means of Liberal Socialism, of tyrants and bullies, and all the myriad of malignant cultural systems  that so inspire and lead to man's inhumanity to man.... This country was founded in order to rid ourselves of all that.

Point aside, if one wishes to emigrate here, let them do it legally, in the same manner in which one would emigrate to any other country in the world.  Thanks to  gutless Politicians on both sides of the aisle, largely intimidated by the Liberal Elite Media and the PC police, only in the USA have illegal emigrants been given special unconstitutional rights of protection and accommodation to break the law.

Nevertheless, once here, let emigrants learn to adopt to the ways and means of America, in principle and practice, in order to prosper in this new land...

That's not to say that there is nothing of value from the "old country."  We are a nation of subcultures rich in the inheritance of other peoples and places, a host of foods and customs, talents and intelligence.  No one is arguing that America hasn't profited from these wonderful differences and their inclusion within this culture.  We are all proud of all the influences that have been added to the wealth and depth of this great country.

But these wonderful influences and differences between us are only a strength to America when they don't in themselves become overwhelming to the American experience itself.  Americans should unite around their country, not their ancestral subcultures.

The America experience isn't about allowing some form of Liberal Political Correctness to be spun just so that ones cultural habits may arise to pretentiously predominant everyone else's, as is found in the Liberal cause of multiculturalism----a leftist direction that is wholly bent on usurping American culture because it might make others (immigrants and visitors) feel uncomfortable.

To that I say:  If they are so "uncomfortable," and prove unwilling to more fully adopt their new country, maybe it's better if they returned to their country of ancestral origin----for their actions prove they are unwilling to become Americans.  In effect, America is saying, "If you don't like what's on our menu, please eat somewhere else!"

Page 3

Therefore, if one wants to become an American, one should be aware of the need and the good manners to assimilate themselves within their new culture, embracing the American way and standard.  To be an American means to willingly subordinate the regard and respect of ones previous cultures, habits, and languages to what America standards are, and no less.   One language, one country, one Republic government, one direction, under one God, the God of our fathers, as it was originally intended.  Heck, if somebody doesn't want to do this, why even consider becoming an American?  This is no free lunch, after all.

Having our own culture forged from the patterns of people who were seeking a better place to live and grow their families, America wasn't supposed to be yet another "starting place" for another failed culture or party politic from an "old country" that proved inhospitable to more civilizing and freedom-based influences.  America was never meant to become yet another Europe, or another Middle East, or another Africa, or another Mexico.  It's America.

As great and diversified and highly regarded as our subcultures are, they were never meant to overshadow the American experience itself.  Subcultures weren't meant to brandish foreign flags above America's, or remain in allegiance to old ties, old fanaticisms, old prejudices and tenets.

Therefore, if one wants to become an American, one should be aware of the need and the good manners to assimilate themselves within their new culture, embracing the American way and standard.  To be an American means to willingly subordinate the regard and respect of ones previous cultures, habits, and languages to what America standards are, and no less.

One language, one country, one Republic, one government, one direction, under one God, the God of our fathers, as it was originally intended.  Heck, if somebody doesn't want to do this, why even consider becoming an American?  This is no free lunch, after all.

The land of the free doesn't mean that anyone is free to come here and commit murder, or rob banks, or fly airplanes into the World Trade Center.  The freedoms that are offered here come with responsibilities, and the first is to respect the culture of the house in which you are a welcomed guest.  Anything short of that is just bad manners!

Sure, we allow and indeed tolerate diversity and difference among us, but that diversity and difference cannot become so focused in order to seek the overthrow of what America was established to be.  We cannot be expected to tolerate the "intolerant" who refuse to assimilate among us.  When threatened by the "intolerant," its time to put limits on their differences and their diversities that show no need to tolerate us in return----that's just common sense.

That means subordinating other ideologies and the following of other Constitutions, or religious orders, from other countries as well.  Islamic fundamentalists be warned-----This is not a country that invites you to usurp our democratic civilization in preference for one of your own making!  That's not what our freedoms are for.

From the beginning, our Founding Founders worried over the fact that this country was to become an extension of some other country.  They did not wish for their labor and sacrifice to result in a replication of a "little" England. Understandably, I think it's safe to say, that these feelings extended to other countries in the world as well.  They had no wish to be another France, Africa, Italy, Mexico, or the Middle East, for that matter.  This was to be the "American Continent," a wholly American experiment where our freedoms would be protected from both government and enemies abroad.

Page 4

Liberal Multiculturalism changes what is at the very heart of what America was supposed to be all about, dividing America from Americans, by making race and ethnicity into special interest groups which in turn now divides the party politic.  When insisting that race and ethnicity trump what it is to be an American, we drive a wedge between us, weakening that which binds us.  Liberal Multiculturalism simply opens the door for further segregation, further divisions, further prejudice, further quarrelling over petty individual differences, turning us into a nation of feuding Hatfields and McCoys.  The examples of the devastating effects of Liberal Multiculturalism would fill a book.

Yet today we find that the meaning of "America" and the "Americans" that inhabit it have become woefully diluted and redefined, as has the sanctity of our Constitution.  Alarmingly, even some on the Supreme Court, notably Breyer, Ginsberg, and Souter in particular, now believe that the interpretation and execution of the Constitution should be influenced by foreign law and culture, open to foreign interpretation.  These Liberal Judges wish to rule by judicial fiat alone, something that the Constitution expressly forbids.

Because of the rampant Liberalism of the media and the political powers that be for the last half century, we have become inundated with the scourge of the Multiculturalism of Liberal Political Correctness.  Liberalism has quietly grown into a propagandized attempt to shame us all into disparaging the American experience.  This is an agenda that is directly counter to what our Forefathers envisioned, as it presses for other cultures and foreign influence to dominate, neutering the American experience and making us all into "hyphenated Americans."

Who can deny that our borders remain open today solely because of the fear that "Latinos" will not vote for the person responsible for closing them?  Who is responsible but Liberals for creating the disconnect that enforcing Emigration Law is racist because it involves Latinos who live south of our border.  Would somebody please explain to me who else lives south of the border?

Who can deny that the wrong-headedness of White Liberal policies of welfare and the like, have served only to victimize Blacks and keep them in the inner cities.  Who is responsible but Liberals for creating the disconnect which reduces any difference of opinion as to how individual responsibilities should be defined as a racist construct, and thus keep Blacks in slavery to the Democratic vote.

As noted conservative intellectual Dr. Thomas Sowell succinctly argues in his book "Black Rednecks and White Liberals," failed White Liberal policies continue to manipulate and direct black culture to remain enslaved to an ill-fated value system which is counterproductive, self-destructive and uncivilizing..., and it's not even their own culture.

The Black Ghetto-Gangsta-Hip-Hop Culture, so glorified and exalted mostly by White intellectuals who have capriciously turned the Black Redneck culture into a sacrosanct symbol of racial identity today, is hardly original or authentic.  As Dr. Sowell astutely documents, it's actually a direct throwback to a white subculture of notorious inbred misfits from the British Isles, of "Rednecks" or "Crackers," as they were infamously known there, who later emigrated to the antebellum South and spread their vile and opprobrious values like a cancer to the Blacks in their midst.

As if trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, Liberal Elitist recent attempts to authenticate this "culture" as the indubitable "Black standard" by which all other Blacks are to be measured, is not only absurd, it's divisively atrocious----a massive "diss" to the Black Community!

Page 5

After reading Dr. Sowell's well argued account, who can deny that the counterproductivity of borrowed Black Redneck and Cracker Culture, mostly propelled into authentication by a self-serving White Liberal and Elite Media Multicultural agenda, are wholly insulating many inner-city Blacks from the American experience, still keeping them from assimilating into American society?

Says Sowell, this emigrant "Redneck or Cracker" southern white subculture---- characteristically known for their counterproductive idleness, irresponsibility, sexual promiscuity, lack of entrepreneurship, uncleanliness, neglect of education, unrepressed egocentrisms, vanity, boastful self-dramatization, vengefulness, arrogance and the touchy intensity of pride and pretentious self-absorption that is ever ready to explode into violence, as well as a "style of religious [and soon after political] oratory marked by strident rhetoric, unbridled emotions, and flamboyant imagery"-----became a "borrowed constellation of attitudes, values and behavior patterns" for Blacks of the antebellum south, and today unwittingly continues on for many inner-city Blacks.

Come to think of it, I think Dr. Sowell is on to something here.  I would argue that not only is he correct in unmasking the true origins of Black Ghetto-Gangsta-Hip-Hop-Culture, but he may have revealed where some of the twisted imaginings of Liberal Elitism have come from as well.  After all, is it just coincidence that the insistent and entrenched narcissistic characteristics of the Marxist base of Liberalism are also defining attributes of the antebellum South's "Redneck or Cracker?"

After reading Dr. Sowell's well argued account, who can deny now that the counterproductivity of borrowed Black "Redneck or Cracker" Culture, mostly propelled into authentication by a self-serving White Liberal and Elite Media Multicultural agenda, only serves to insulate many inner-city Blacks from the American experience, still keeping them from assimilating into American society?

This is slavery, a cultural slavery, of the worst sort-----White Liberals entrapping Black minds within a destructive, "Cracker" prejudicial mindset.  You really have to hand it to Liberals----they can sell anything! Indeed, from all this twisted buffoonery, Liberals keep the Black vote almost entirely in their own Democratic pocket.....

As I have written before, Liberalism, of which Multiculturalism is a deeply rooted part, is a narcissistic extension of selective perception that stems from a premature consolidation of the ego structure, resulting in the narrowing and restricting of critical personality features.  So compromised, Liberalism has proven itself useless in bettering the conditioning of mankind, and in fact, has proven that as a pattern of civility, it actually worsens almost every aspect of humanity at all levels.  Although claiming to be just the opposite of what it is, Liberalism seeks to divide, not unite those in society.

In this vein, Liberal Multiculturalism seeks to regress Americans back to their native or ancestral subcultures, claiming these to be more authentic and pure, and thus are superior and are to be more revered than America itself.  As if on cue, various ethnic subcultures and Elitists, most notably the "hate-America-first-crowd" and those of the Leftist intelligentsia, are attempting to cast themselves into the position of being more important than the America they now find themselves in.

As can plainly be seen, Liberals attempt to exalt foreign values and norms above the American Experience as a whole, works to normalize among new and old residents alike the arrogant refusal to assimilate, causing a splintering of America by exalting our differences above each other, making malignant that which was supposed to heal and make strong without a scar.

Instead of uniting Americans, Liberals seek to divide us from one another, so that we forget and denounce the fact that we are first and foremost, Americans.

They paint the picture that the whole idea of immigrant assimilation into the American life-style is bad, distasteful, and disrespectful to other cultures, and especially to the international culture they so preen to subscribe themselves.

To them, being an American is too patriotic, to flag-waving, to corny, and more importantly detracts from their own distinguishing self-importance.

In this way, Liberals are shockingly very much in accord with Islamofascists.  Whereas Liberals want international law and tribunal to rule America, Islamofascists crave to overrun this country's Constitution with their own Islamic Sharia law.  Both parties appear to hate and disparage what America and her freedoms have historically stood for, wishing instead to make her into something that is more in line with their own image.

Believing that because a great-grand parent or other was born overseas now demands that one be called by a different appellation is not only ridiculous, but vain as well.  To argue that we all need to pay formal attention to ones "new" self-defined ancestral affiliation----claiming the specialty of being a hyphenated American as if this should be central to ones self-esteem----reeks of unabashed egotism. Applying General Russell Honoré words in this context seem to apply, "Don't get stuck on stupid," you stupid-heads!

I have found no better and salient example of this national divisiveness than is found in how we are now called on to refer to our fellow Americans by a hyphenated Americanism, such as African-American, Mexican-American, Irish-American, etc..

Outrageously, some "subcultures" are now openly offended and "dissed" claiming that they are shamed, psychologically disfigured, or culturally lessened when we slip and forget to call them by their full hyphenated appellation----a different designation that they wantonly think credible even though most of them have never placed even one foot upon the shores of their ancestors.

Believing that because a great-grand parent or other was born overseas now demands that one be called by a different national name than the rest of us is not only ridiculous, but vain as well.

Hence believing that the handle of a hyphenated American is critically essential in maintaining one's cultural stature and identity, is really just a misdirected sense of needing to feel self-important.

I was reminded by Dr. Sowell's words that more than fifty years ago, T.S. Eliot offered this: "Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important.  They don't mean to do harm... but the harm does not interest them.... or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves."

Indeed, what is so alarming about this over-riding self-absorbed tendency is not that their inappropriate actions cause others unintended and careless harm, but that the harm, pain, and suffering they cause others to endure, they care nothing about!  Unless of course, there is political gain to be had, as we have lately witnessed in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

They care nothing about the ill-wind that they set into motion, denying their responsibilities of having put others through an experience of which they did not ask to be a part.  Everything else becomes eclipsed by their own self-absorption.  And in their "endless struggle to think well of themselves," they generally make others think less of themselves in the process.

Again, in reality the moniker touted by a hyphenated American is simply an extension of Multiculturalism, a divisive work under the guise of racial or ethnic pride that has run amuck, poised to separate us further and make the end-user less attractive.  It's just another symptom of the worsening and coarsening of our society brought about by the malignancy and underlying divisiveness of Liberal Philosophy.

Interestingly, back in 1915 President Teddy Roosevelt said as much in front of the Knights of Columbus:

"There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all. This is just as true of the man who puts "native" before the hyphen as of the man who puts German or Irish or English or French before the hyphen. Americanism is a matter of the spirit and of the soul. Our allegiance must be purely to the United States. We must unsparingly condemn any man who holds any other allegiance. But if he is heartily and singly loyal to this Republic, then no matter where he was born, he is just as good an American as any one else."

"The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic. The men who do not become Americans and nothing else are hyphenated Americans; and there ought to be no room for them in this country. The man who calls himself an American citizen and who yet shows by his actions that he is primarily the citizen of a foreign land, plays a thoroughly mischievous part in the life of our body politic. He has no place here; and the sooner he returns to the land to which he feels his real heart-allegiance, the better it will be for every good American. There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else."

"For an American citizen to vote as a German-American, an Irish-American, or an English-American, is to be a traitor to American institutions; and those hyphenated Americans who terrorize American politicians by threats of the foreign vote are engaged in treason to the American Republic."

"The foreign-born population of this country must be an Americanized population - no other kind can fight the battles of America either in war or peace. It must talk the language of its native-born fellow-citizens, it must possess American citizenship and American ideals. It must stand firm by its oath of allegiance in word and deed and must show that in very fact it has renounced allegiance to every prince, potentate, or foreign government. It must be maintained on an American standard of living so as to prevent labor disturbances in important plants and at critical times."

"None of these objects can be secured as long as we have immigrant colonies, ghettos, and immigrant sections, and above all they cannot be assured so long as we consider the immigrant only as an industrial asset. The immigrant must not be allowed to drift or to be put at the mercy of the exploiter. Our object is to not to imitate one of the older racial types, but to maintain a new American type and then to secure loyalty to this type. We cannot secure such loyalty unless we make this a country where men shall feel that they have justice and also where they shall feel that they are required to perform the duties imposed upon them. The policy of "Let alone" which we have hitherto pursued is thoroughly vicious from two stand-points. By this policy we have permitted the immigrants, and too often the native-born laborers as well, to suffer injustice. Moreover, by this policy we have failed to impress upon the immigrant and upon the native-born as well that they are expected to do justice as well as to receive justice, that they are expected to be heartily and actively and single-mindedly loyal to the flag no less than to benefit by living under it."

Strong words, indeed!  So the next time somebody may be politically incorrect when suggesting that Liberals are not patriotic..., well, maybe they're right!  After all, if it looks like a duck, and struts like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck, isn't it?
