Understanding the Basics...Part 1

Things no longer taught in our Churches and Synagogues....

~written from the common sense perspective of The Winds of the Soul~

Unfortunately, acknowledging the existence of such questions has never been a strong point of the religious set, as it seems sacrilegious to some, taboo to others, believing that such is misbegotten, an affront to God's sanctity and intentions, and that we are ill-mannered to even think about it.  Moreover, there is the belief that only the heathen, the wayward and the sinful would pose such things, and that "proper" Judeo-Christians are above that kind of inquiry.  But they are as wrong as those that mock His Commandments.

Probably the least understood and most forgotten message of the Gospel is that all the Lord wants from us is to be Good, and by being Good, enter into His Happiness.  Such a simple request.  Indeed, it is His First Command to us.  One that should always be in the uppermost parts of our minds and hearts.  It should be our most fundamental desire.

He wants us all to be Good.  Not just okay..., but "Good."  Which means He wants us to be after His order of Being, and become kin to His Manner and Character after the template of His Name, of His Seed within us.  He wants us to see as He sees, love as He loves, "be" as He is in everything that is to be done.  By adopting His manner, we are promised that we will become like Him, as in like Father like son.

The most astonishing thing about this declaration, is that in being "Good" after the Manner of His Goodness, we then become qualified to become as Happy as He is.  And of course He knows this.  This has been His Design all along.  Thus, from the very start, He has commanded us to worship Him with our whole heart, mind and soul....indeed with all our might so as to accomplish this very purpose.  So it is that with every energy we are bequeathed, we are to invest into the worship of the Lord our God.

But many don't understand the connection between His Commandments, Goodness and our Happiness.  They don't seem to understand how it all fits together.  Some still don't see the reason for altogether obeying His Commandments and why they are all that important, not only in keeping a society civil, but in securing our own personal happiness as well..., especially when there are so many different and competing versions of "happiness" out there, falling in and falling out of style like the fashions they are.

Then again, some just don't want to "see" because it immediately challenges their narrow views of pleasure and satisfaction, and interferes with their notion of just wanting to have "fun."  In seeing only narrowly or temporally, they still don't understand as to why God requires and commands us that we "worship" Him above everything else.  Indeed, they ask, "Why and what for?" For these, the costs are just too great, and it's better to let "sleeping connections" lie.

Moreover, like all things, it's really a test of faith for us.  We should all know by know that when truly believing the best in Him, the best of Him will be revealed to our minds, then satisfying all our questions and putting all latent doubts to rest.  If we do otherwise and not question in such faith (i.e., in not believing the best in Him), the best of Him will never be revealed to our hearts and minds.  Indeed, we prove undeserving to know any differently.

In fact, despite the source of doubt, only when we can honestly recognize the realities of these misunderstandings can we finally dismiss the more obvious exposé of subsequent descending questions that arise..., specifically those that concern the necessities of "adoring God," and thereafter worshipping Him by following the Commandments, such as: Is He really that needy?  Does His ego really need all that attention?  Isn't that a bit sycophantically narcissistic?  Doesn't such a co-dependency limit God's power and station, etc.?

His desire and motivations for us to worship Him can only be truly understood when these misinformed questions and their associated false sentimentality can be ruled out in their entirety.  And, we should understand that only when we go through this exercise will He then find reason to make His primary Reasons and Motives clear to us.  Otherwise, we may unwittingly hold mixed opinions of Him, which darkness clouds our faith and questions our resolve that He is indeed a perfect God.

Moreover, like all things, it's really a test of faith for us.  We should all know by now that when truly believing the Best in Him, the Best of Him will be revealed to our minds, then satisfying all our questions and putting all latent doubts to rest.  If we do otherwise and not question in such faith (i.e., in not believing the Best in Him), the Best of Him will never be revealed to our hearts and minds.  Indeed, we prove undeserving to know any differently.

In other words, when we push these uncomfortable questions aside, they still remain to be answered, and unless addressed, prove circuitously undermining to any faith that we profess.  The faithful know that we must  dismiss these questions by finding the appropriate means to have them answered and finally put them to rest.  To ignore them or placate them thinking that they'll just go away, is to be foolish and invites the peril of the dissolution of our faith...

Just as can be said of all relationships, denial of those things that remain unanswered can act deleteriously, damaging the foundation of the building, undermining the basis of affection and regard.  If we allow such to go unseen and unexposed, the safety of all that are in the house is called into question.  Dealing with things openly (but tactfully) is always the sounder advice.  Our questions should not harm the ones we love if asked lovingly and tenderly.  So it is with God.  We may ask Him anything in Faith regarding the Best in Him, and it His joy to respond to us in like kind.

Nevertheless, the religious community largely fears these very questions and rather than seeking an answer in the spirit of thinking the Best of Him, they have led us to believe that such a question is (first) insulting and (second) only undermines, not strengthens, our faith.

Unfortunately, there are many today who turn "worship" into a blind following of sorts, a twisting of the intention of "faithfully following" which is as wrong today as it has always been.

As I have written before, "true worship" like "true faith" has nothing to do with blindness.  Neither has it anything to do with rote learning, mindless memorization, or being blindly if not stupidly obedient, thinking that somehow Heaven will smile on us in the process.  In fact "true worship" grimaces at any suggestion that it is at all so defined.

Page 2

As we all know, "questions" can be asked with unseemly motives in order to maliciously attack another, or asked in true innocence hoping to find the truth of someone or something.  When the latter is employed, it is said to be "faithful," since we are hoping for the best in someone.  When the former is used, it is thought to be scurrilous, because we are hoping for our worst imaginings to be confirmed.  The motivation of our question can thus become its telltale director, often leading us only to what we prejudicially want to find.

On the contrary, true worship has everything to do with the freedoms of inquiry and investigation, thoughtful meditation and exploration into the "object" that is to be worshiped.  True worship directs that we need to think analytically and honestly, humbly and contritely about whom we are to worship.  It demands our honest involvement and inquiry to levels of understanding of God's Character that far too few people understand.

Contrary to many religious leaders, then, I would argue that we are to question in faith what and who we are to worship, and everything else we may do thereinafter for that matter, if we are ever to do anything truly and honestly..., not for the sake of doubting and undermining that basis of our faith, but to strengthen it.

As we all know, "questions" can be asked with unseemly motives in order to maliciously attack another, or asked in true innocence hoping to find the truth of someone or something.  When the latter is employed, it is said to be "faithful," since we are hoping to find further evidence of the best in someone.  When the former is used, it is thought to be scurrilous, because we are hoping for our worst imaginings to be confirmed.  The motivation of our question can thus become its telltale director, often leading us only to what we prejudicially want to find.

And there is this third option:  If we believe that we need to worship God for the sake of His needs to be applauded, or because He likes the adoration of His Children..., as some imagine is the penultimate experience..., Heaven help us.  Because we thereafter must hold some idea of Him that is not particularly attractive nor true, remaining flawed and inaccurate.

Now, if we allow ourselves to think a bit, the idea of trying to believe in someone while holding a flawed understanding of them is like trying to juggle while closing your eyes.  No matter the Herculean effort, something is going to come down on our head....  Holding onto any falsehood about God is to invite darkness into our hearts, there to sour everything else that it touches. Then our faith becomes tainted as well.  If not rooted out but left to its own, like the threat of dry-rot, our foundation will eventually fail.

In this regard, many people run amuck when trying to understand what it means to truly worship God, so that the critical manner to approach Him is never exercised, never realized, never practiced.  Indeed, if both our "ideas of worship" and "what we worship" are off the mark, then the results will be less than spectacular, and always down right disappointing.  And then we will have no one to blame but ourselves.

But if we are brave enough to find proper responses  for these questions rather than bury them as many do, we will find some wonderful answers that not only simply and reasonably dismiss these inane questions with verifiable proofs, but exalt our faith in ways which could not occur and could not be understood otherwise.  Indeed, we may then truly believe in the Best of Him.

As I have written in the Winds of the Soul, understanding the First Commandment is actually understanding how the entire Gospel message is wonderfully condensed within its very fabric.

Page 3

This is the door through which we must pass.  It is this Presence of God within us, no matter how feint the Voice is to begin with, that we should continually seek, because in so doing and listening, we learn to "identify" and "recognize" the Master's Voice, i.e., His Impressions of Spirit to us showing us what is Good and what is not.  And in so listening, we may then learn through our own experiences of trial and error that His direction is sweet, and indeed is "Good," His intentions sound and faithful, His advice intelligent and wise, so much so that we begin to actually adopt and follow these directions ourselves.

As we query the "Why?" behind His First Commandment, we are led to see that it has nothing to do with giving adulation to another..., at least that is not the direct intention..., but instead, it is meant to draw us near to something within us which is designed to specifically respond to our sincerity and humility in our quest to "be Good."

God is not stupid.  He is reasonable and demands that we are so as well.  Accordingly, He would not ask us to worship Him without our having any direct, immediate and personal knowledge of Him.  It follows further that asking us to worship Him with our whole heart, mind and soul is only impossible if we are to attempt such an exercise without having any direct and foundational experience of Him.

But happily, we have been given such an experience, although many of us have never dared to define it so.  What many seem to forget is that His Presence has been a part of us from our very beginning.  It is His Spirit that was first placed within us and given to the "children we used to be" for safe keeping.  These were our first impressions of Him, namely, those small and frequent resonations of His Voice that spoke to us through the feelings of our conscience.  These are the persuasions that were a part of our every waking moment when we were younger; they only becoming dimmed over time as life wore us down.

Thus, His Spirit was personally experienced by everyone one of us from our beginning.  It is to this experience of Him that we have direct knowledge.  And it is to this real-life experience to which we have been given the spiritual and intellectual capacity to receive, and from which we must draw ourselves to again.

This is the door through which we must pass.  It is this Presence of God within us, no matter how feint the Voice is to begin with, that we should continually seek, because in so doing and listening, we learn to "identify" and "recognize" the Master's Voice, i.e., His Impressions of Spirit in showing us what is Good and what is not.  And in so listening, we may then learn through our own experiences of trial and error that His direction is sweet, and indeed is "Good," His intentions sound and faithful, His advice intelligent and wise, so much so that we begin to actually adopt and follow these directions ourselves.

In a very real sense, He has given us this opportunity to "browse" and sample the goods, as it were, and see for ourselves if He and His Way are not everything that He has promised. He asks, 'Come and drink from this Well of Everlasting Waters and see for yourselves if My Way does not satisfy in ways that others don't.'  (see John 4:1-15)

Thus, He doesn't ask us to follow Him blindly or accept His Council unseen, but only after the due course of our tested and weighted experiences with His Voice.  To be sure, He knows that if we are sincere and honest in our deliberations with Him, we will prove Him to be all that He claims to be.  Indeed, so sure is He, that He actually invites the contest!

Page 4

As we prove faithful and attracted to His Voice within us, such demonstrated affection is quintessential and critical, for it alone acts to enable the germination of His Seed within us.  Like the warmth of the spring sun, the strength of our directed and sincere affections signal to His resting Seed beneath the surface of our consciousness that it's time to germinate and spring forth, time to reach into the sun and grow.

I believe that this specific involvement becomes our first mandatory step towards worshipping Him.  It is this contest to which He invites our participation.  And in such determined participation, we place ourselves within a spiritual position of triggering a number of astounding possibilities that most of the world does not understand in the least....  Here's why:

Within that portion of His Spirit that is given to us rests the powers not only to communicate His Will to us, but also to enable His Will to find a receptive and willing place within us so that it may be executed and unfolded to our understanding correctly.  As we draw near unto Him within this didactic contest, He also draws near unto us.  He does so in the form of enabling the very real germination of the Seed of His Spirit, of the Seed of His Goodness, within us that was first given to us as "the children we used to be."

As we prove faithful and attracted to His Voice within us, such demonstrated affection is quintessential and critical, for it alone acts to enable the germination of His Seed within us.  Like the warmth of the spring sun, the strength of our directed and sincere affections signal to His resting Seed Pattern beneath the surface of our consciousness that it's time to germinate and spring forth, time to reach into the sun and grow.

The similarities between the patterns found in nature's ways of increase and our own spiritual capacities for increase are unmistakable.  Our correctly targeted affections upon anything that is Good (for all things that are Good come only from God Himself) have the exacting power to "turn on" the Heavenly powers of the Seed of Christ within us.  And with that signal, the Seed begins to grow.  It's just that real....

But just as everything in nature takes patience to grow and develop before the fruit can be harvested, it takes time for those things that are Spiritual within us to be realized as well.  Don't expect that a few days of trying to be "Good" will suddenly bring eternal changes overnight.  It just won't happen.  The prize goes to those who endure until the end, though the journey will become easier and more profitable in the interim.

Now understand this:  Quite ingeniously, if some are not attracted to the Voice of Goodness, or happen to oppose the ruminations and persuasions of His Goodly Spirit, the Seed of Goodness will consequently remain dormant and asleep within them.  This is a "right" that is part and parcel with one's free agency----No mind will be forced to love Goodness; no person will be forced to embrace its ways.

In such a misguided person, the Seed of God will not germinate solely because it remains uninvited and unwelcomed.  This, in fact, becomes a self-selecting/self-discriminating mechanism whereby only those that are sincerely attracted to Goodness and who direct the energies of their soul, their heart, and their mind to such a target or construct, will benefit from the Seed's growth.  Only when such energies of Goodly desire are honestly and correctly targeted and directed to act upon the Seed, will the wonderful awakening from slumber actually occur.

Page 5

How perfect the process then!  Only those that make a commitment to surround themselves with Goodness, that seek it with their whole heart, mind and soul, will have the aid of an awakened Seed Pattern to bridge the distance between who we are and what we can become, becoming heirs to all the joys and treasures of Heaven.  But for those that desire otherwise, or think the pursuit of Goodness stupid and boring, or hedonistically and wrongly re-define what Goodness is in the first place, the Seed of Goodness will not show forth any increase.  It will remain dormant and inactive.

Now, as a biological seed begins to germinate, it takes from the soil and its environment the nutrients it needs and transforms them miraculously, as it were, into the beauty of the plant which is born in consequence, all according to the pattern hidden within itself.

The Seed of God has similar remarkable properties.  It possesses the God-given capacity to remake us after its Own Image, even the Image of God, making us into His sons and daughters according to the Pattern of God which is inherently preserved within its core.

But note again, the transformation can only begin with those that have so correctly and intelligently chosen to direct their affections and desires towards the correct target, namely, any manifestation of Goodness within the world, internally or externally.  Again, those that have no such sincere or heartfelt desire for Goodness, nor truly wish to "be" Good, or whose desire for Goodness is only an outward pretentious show, won't even make it to first base, i.e., the Seed and its inherent powers will continue to slumber.

How perfect the process then!  Only those that make a genuine commitment to surround themselves with Goodness, and thus seek it with their whole heart, mind and soul, will have the aid of an awakened Seed Pattern to bridge the distance between who we are now and what we can become, becoming heirs to all the joys and treasures of Heaven.

But for those that desire otherwise, or think the pursuit of Goodness stupid, trite and boring, or hedonistically and wrongly re-define what Goodness is in the first place, the Lord's Seed of Goodness will not show forth any increase.  It will remain dormant and inactive.  And that precious Seed which was given to them in the beginning for the purpose of increase, will then be taken from them and given to another who proved more faithful.  This is precisely and unequivocally what the Lord was talking about in what has come to be known as the Parable of the Talents:

Matthew 25:13-30 13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh. 14 For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. 15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. 16 Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. 17 And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. 18 But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money.

19 After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. 20 And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. 21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. 22 He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them. 23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

Page 6

As the Parable of the Talents attests, we then become wise and profitable servants in the eyes of the Lord.  If we choose differently, and hide away this Heavenly-gifted capacity, then we choose unwisely, and will be considered unprofitable in the eyes of the Lord.  And then, that Portion of His Spirit (the talent) which was given and not used, will be taken from the slothful and given to others who had proved more profitable and faithful.

24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: 25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine. 26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: 27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. 28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. 29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. 30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The spiritual and physical realities of this are undeniable.  By sincerely and determinately seeking Goodness in the Lord's defining, we have been given the ability to enable the powers of the Seed of Christ within us.  By specifically loving Goodness, which is the first attribute of God that we have come to know as children, and loving this witnessed Goodness with all of our heart, mind and soul, we act wisely to trigger the germination of His Seed within us..., and with that, the remaking of our broken-selves into something of a Heavenly design, even after the Image of His Only Begotten.

As the Parable of the Talents attests, we then become wise and profitable servants in the eyes of the Lord.  If we choose differently, and hide away this Heavenly-gifted capacity, then we choose unwisely, and we'll be considered unprofitable in the eyes of the Lord.  In consequence, that Portion of His Spirit (the "talent," or "the Lord's goods") which was given and not used, will be taken from the slothful and given to others who proved more profitable and faithful.

In properly using the "talent" or "the Lord's money"  given us, by awakening it from its slumber by the designated process so that it may then begin the process of increase, we then become slowly and incrementally capable of experiencing God's perspective..., quite literally becoming "on-line" with His Understanding, capable then of receiving His Grace and the blessings of the Atonement, according to the faith and affections in which we continuously place on His Goodness.  Quite extraordinary, isn't it really?

Now for the point and purpose of all of this:  This process in which we elect to awaken and enable His Seed Pattern makes possible for His Promises of deliverance to unfold within us, meaning that we may then become positioned to experience His exacting Happiness and Joy, even the Joy of God Himself.

I submit that this is the point of the entire exercise of following the First and Greatest Commandment.  To be "happy" as God is happy would seem to me to be the eternal desire of a loving parent, and that specific loving intention would become the very foundation of all that He would ask us to do thereinafter.

Accordingly, He has commanded and directed us to enter into His Way of "Being" by first developing an allegiance and affection for the Goodness that He stands for, in order for us to eventually then become as gloriously "happy" and "joy-filled" as He is Himself.  This is the essence, the purpose and intention and direction of the First Commandment.  Don't you see?  That's why it was given!

In other words, to worship Him, correctly and productively, specifically means to develop the allegiance and affection for which He stands, for Goodness itself, so as to ultimately, through such a course of "unfolding" and Spiritual realizations, become as "happy" as Heaven has intended from our very beginning

So, we may now see that from the very first, He has commanded us to adopt His Means, and commanded us for the sole, express and fundamental purpose to become as Happy and fulfilled as He is Himself.  And in anticipation of our faithful obedience, He has endowed a portion of His Spirit given to us with the Heavenly Power to specifically bring about the eternal reality of our Happiness, placing the very means of Heavenly increase within our very being.

That's actually what the First Commandment really gets down to, you see.  That's what it's all about.  That's why it's so important.  It commands us to enter the Way, His Glorious Way, through which our Eternal Happiness is then guaranteed.  That's why it's so very critically essential for us to follow.  That's why it is called the greatest of all the Commandments, upon which the Law and the Prophets hang.  For it holds within its admonition, the very point, purpose and direction of enabling His Will within us.

As we wisely accept the growth of His Beloved Seed Pattern within us, and we then more willingly take upon His Name and guiding Impressions, allowing ourselves to become redirected in His Purposes, we subsequently find that we do so for the ultimate reason of our own happiness.  Imagine that!

By such a revelation, we then must acknowledge that the First Commandment which directs us to worship the Lord our God with all our might, mind and strength, is actually the First Intention of God being made manifest to our ears... namely, His Primary Desire for us to become as Happy as He is..., with the directions, capacities and means of such a feat embedded within the correct execution of the Command itself.  Absolutely wonderful!  See how it all fits together?  See what understanding is available to us when we don't ask amiss?  Only with this understanding can we then confidently dismiss the inane questions posed earlier as truly being inane!

Of course, this activity of increase as it becomes fulfilled within us, works hand in hand to further glorify His Name..., in that Our Eternal Happiness is thus made possible by His Seed Pattern and Name within us, increasing His Manner and way of Being within us..., and by His Seed Pattern becoming inseparably connected with each of us, we extend His Influence.  We thus are allowed to inherit His Righteousness, and every treasure and joy of Heaven that is offered, after His Manner and Pattern, again adding further glory to His Way.

This Heavenly process then spreads His Influence and Power throughout our very being, glorifying His Name accordingly, proving that His Goodness is the ultimate happiness of Heaven.

And with that realization, our hearts are truly filled with thanksgiving, offered to the One who made us all.  Indeed, thanksgiving then is freely and continuously given, because we become resonating witnesses of the Greatness of His Goodness, of God Himself "in us" and "we within Him," fulfilling Christ's promise of the Atonement.... that His Love may be within us, as His Father's love is in Himself.... (for more, see John 17: 11-26)

In this we can witness most saliently this more excellent Love from our Heavenly Father----His wanting His children to experience the most happiness and joy that is possible, even eternal joy and happiness.

This is breathtaking to me.  For in this primal...., no, "eternal" is the better word..., desire of the Father we are able to catch a glimpse of His Character and Being, what His priorities are, and that which makes Him tick, if I may be so bold to say.

It demonstrably assures us that His main intention is for us to be as happy as He is.  What could be more beautiful and more inviting to believe in His Word than that?  I defy any to find something better.

Furthermore, I ask you, what parent is there that maintains any decent sense of affection for their children that does not think first for their children's happiness?  I ask you, what parent would want anything less?  A child's happiness is always a central occupation of a loving parent.  Anything less, and the child would surely not trust the Hand that guides and protects him.   And if we who are fallen and imperfect can rise to think in such priorities, think how much more our Heavenly Father feels for us.... Surely this must be the basis of our trust in Him as well..., and indeed proves itself to be, for it reflects the very Best of Him!
